Every year, more than a million people die from lung cancer. It is the most common type of lung cancer in the world. Lung cancer develops when abnormal cells grow in the tissues of the lungs. Often, the cause of lung cancer is cigarette smoke. Other causes are radon gas, asbestos, and viruses, but smoking causes 90% of lung cancer incidents.

Male smokers has a 17.2% chance of developing lung cancer while female smokers has an 11.6% risk. Those who do not smoke has a little over 1% chance of getting lung cancer. The difference is incredible. But there is now a compound that seems to work in protecting lung cells from growing abnormally. This compound is resveratrol.

Resveratrol is a very powerful antioxidant. As such, it can help protect our cells from free radicals that can cause cancer. By triggering the enzyme SIRT1 in our body, resveratrol starts an anti-inflammatory process in the lungs. You have to remember that inflammation in the lungs is one of the risk factors of lung cancer. So by triggering an anti-inflammatory process in the lungs, the development of lung cancer cells are delayed or stopped.

However, this should not make smokers happy. Smoking is still a nasty habit. In fact, the cigarette smoke is enough to make resveratrol work in a less effective manner. In order to get the full benefits of resveratrol, quitting smoking is a must.
