The Legend of the Acai Berry

acai berries in a bowl

According to legends, the Acai palm tree was named about the daughter of an Indian chief. The girl’s name was Iaca. During her time, food was hard to find. Their village was not doing so well so the chief ordered all newborns to be sacrificed. They did not need new more mouths to feed, after all. When Iaca gave birth, her father ordered her to sacrifice her daughter as well. Iaca followed her father’s orders but she was very sad. After many days of mourning, she heard a baby crying one night. She followed the sound and saw her baby next to a palm tree with dark purple fruits. Iaca went to her daughter and huggged her.

The next day, her body was found holding the palm tree and her eyes staring at the berries on top of the tree. The chief told his subject to harvest the fruits and they found out that it satisfied their hunger. The fruit also gave them energy. The chief was happy to hear this. He stopped the sacrifices of new babies and named the tree after her beloved daughter. Acai is his daughter’s name spelled backwards.
