Resveratrol For Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer. It affects both men and women all over the world. One of the risk factors of breast cancer is prolonged exposure to estrogen. Normally, our body is equipped to process estrogen. However, when too much estrogen is present, our body’s reaction may get out of balance. When this happens, estrogen metabolites are produced. These metabolites interact with breast cells and cause them to mutate. This is one factor for the growth of tumors.
Studies show, however, that resveratrol decreases the chances of estrogen to be processed into dangerous metabolites. With resveratrol in the system, less estrogen become estrogen metabolites. Another thing that resveratrol does is stopping the metabolites from interacting with the breast cells. Resveratrol prevents the metabolites from wreaking havoc on the DNA of the cells in the breast.
Aside from preventing this interaction, resveratrol also produces an enzyme that destroys estrogen metabolites. These studies, however, have been done in test tube. They have not been conducted on real women. But the great news is that resveratrol is a proven anti-cancer compound. It will be quite unusual to say that it will not work on breast cancer considering the evidence shown in these studies.
